Why is IBM doing this?

• Money. IBM is a for-profit corporation.

• IBM sells hardware. Software drives hardware sales.

• Money.

• Linux/390 will sell more hardware (and has already).

• Money.

• It positions them nicely against Microsoft, Sun, HP, etc.

• Did I mention money?

• They get the same advantages of Open Source as everyone else.

• It pisses off Microsoft.

• They get to do things they couldn’t do otherwise, and it saves them money.
